Tackling food marketing to children:
trans-disciplinary perspectives

WHO should come to your session?

Any health professional who is interested in public health policies to improve the health of Europeans, especially vulnerable groups such as children.

WHAT can we expect during the session?

We will lean how food marketing children influences in their food choice, and what effect that has on their health. We also focus on public health policies in Europe and how the food industry is using nutrient profiling to improve the nutritional value of food and to regulate food advertising.

HOW can one apply it in the daily practice?

Unfortunately, all healthcare professionals are seeing how advertising has a negative impact on the global health. This situation requires coordinated actions from the health authorities, but also an awareness of European dietitians to promote changes in the food industry and European and national regulation for food marketing.

FUTURE - how will this topic develop in the future?

Both the European and national health authorities are on the right way to apply stricter rules to regulate food marketing to children. On the other hand, the food industry is increasingly aware that a change in its marketing and food formulation strategies is needed; in fact, food industry is making great efforts to improve the nutritional value of processed foods by applying Nutrient profiling models. The European dietitian workforce will contribute to change the scene.

WHY should all dieticians come to the conference?

The EFAD Conference in Rotterdam will be the meeting point for European dietitians who want to contribute to a healthier Europe. It will be a perfect framework for learning and sharing.

ENDietS - Network of Dietetic Students

When was ENDietS founded and what does it stand for?

ENDietS was founded in 2014 at the yearly EFAD Conference in Athens. The European Network of Dietetic Students (ENDietS) is a network created and led by students of Nutrition and Dietetics from all over Europe. ENDietS is internationally focused and clearly embedded within the European Federation of the Associations of Dietitians (EFAD) which represents the interests of all European dietitians and promotes the development of the dietetic profession.

What is your mission?

Our mission is to provide a platform to unite, connect and empower students of the above mentioned and other related scientific fields. Within the network we promote experience and knowledge sharing, as well as gaining new friendships and learning about different cultural approaches to nutrition.

Can you introduce yourself as presidents of ENDietS?

The two current presidents of ENDietS are Karla Ferk, master student of Nutrition at the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology of the University of Zagreb (Croatia), and Lore D'Helft, bachelor student of nutrition and dietetics at Artesis Plantijn University College Antwerpen (Belgium).

What is the goal of ENDietS?

Our mission is to provide a platform to unite, connect and empower students of the above mentioned and other related scientific fields. Within the network we promote experience and knowledge sharing, as well as gaining new friendships and learning about different cultural approaches to nutrition.

How can I be part of ENDietS?

Anyone can be part of ENDietS as there is no registration fee. We welcome:

  • students of dietetics (or a dietetics related professional field)
  • recently graduated dietitians (alumni)
  • students following a dietetics programme at a Higher Education Institute (or dietetics related programme)

Why should students join the Student’s program in Rotterdam?

ENDietS provides European and international students with unique experiences, not only in the dietetic field, but also in communication and networking.
The next ENDietS Student Day will be held in Rotterdam on 28 September 2017, on the first day of the 10th EFAD Conference ‘The future is now’ (28-30 September 2017). All students are welcome to join the ENDietS activities and learn about networking, participate in workshops and exchange ideas and experiences with students from other countries. The Student Day will end with a social activity, where all registered students will be invited to join us for food and drinks.
